Polarized

This weekend was an interesting one in the realm of politics. I love politics and feel almost guilty for not weighing in before now on this topic. But I observed some interesting things over the day yesterday in the world of Twitter and Facebook. What did I see?

Polarization.

I saw those that actually took the time to understand the HCR bill and even attempt to read it. I give those people uber credit. Whether or not they supported it, at least they tried to be involved and understand.

Then I saw those that didn't appear to know much more than the main stream media was reporting and used that opportunity to bash others. And I saw it both ways. It wasn't just those who were opposed that were bashing those that approved. It was vice versa too. That made me sad.

I love that social media gives us all an outlet to put our beliefs and opinions out there. I do it too. What I don't like it people being down right mean to others for expressing their opinions. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all!

Don't get me wrong.. I love a political debate but there are ways to do it that don't involve personal attacks.

I supported Barack Obama when he ran for president. I believed and still do believe in his quest for change. In my mind, change from some of the politics of the last administration. And I still think he is doing ok... but not great. What he isn't doing great in? The quest to bring the two polarized parties a little closer together. To bring the polarization in politics across the country closer together. Big task, I know. Who could do that, I am not sure?

Here is what I do know. I support our President. And I would no matter which party they belong too. I don't have to agree with their politics or decisions but I still am in awe of the office. And I also believe that our presidents don't strive for that office to ruin our country. They do believe in what they fight for. I believe that President Obama believes health care reform is necessary. I believe that he wants to do better by the people.

And I believe that health care reform is necessary. I don't know enough to know what the best way to do that is. I don't know what a reasonable cost is for shaping up such an important system in our country. I know I hear stories of people going bankrupt from health care bills and not being insured for this reason or that. And I don't think it is right. Will this plan be the answer? I don't know that either.

What I hope is that we can work together and do the best we can to improve the life of others that don't have the same opportunities that I have. The ones that are finding it hard to stay afloat. And I hope we can all remember that we put these politicians in office and if we don't like how they are handling themselves then we don't vote for them next time. I do believe that has a lot to do with why the Dems have a majority now and why we have a democratic president. Time will tell how long that will last.

Nice blog Tina...I totally agree with you about comments. At times while reading the Star Trib online, I have to stop myself from reading the comment section because it's just bashing and people not knowing all the facts making points that aren't true. I agree with you 100% about supporting the President no matter what party he is from or the changes he's trying to make. Someone has to be in charge and everyone thinks that their opinion is the correct one and they could do so much better.....it's kind of how I felt coaching and parents at times... If you know so much about it and think you can do better, then why don't you coach? :)

Great post.

We're having multiple battles with two different insurance companies. If we lose, we could be on the hook for 10s of thousands of dollars, and we actually have health insurance. I can't imagine how hard it must be uninsured.

I'm hopeful that this bill will actually make a difference.

I also feel frustrated with the polarization of our country. I see it more on the news than on Facebook, since most of my "friends" on Facebook share similar beliefs as me. I agree that people do not take the time to even understand the health care bill. I read a New York times article that explained its purpose and the changes that would occur. I can see why people would not love it. But my thinking is, this is change, and whatever change that one president tries to make is not going to please everyone, by any means.
Also, I saw your twitter update on the side of the blog page. What great news about no hospital bed rest. I'm very happy for you. I am sure you are so relieved.
