We had our 20 week ultrasound this morning. Since I have been feeling more movement lately, I was confident that the baby was doing ok but we were anxious to get confirmation of that AND to find out if it is a boy or a girl.
And the baby is doing fine. Actually the baby is doing great. Everything looked good and the baby is measuring as it should. Everything was great until.... the ultrasound technician took a look at my cervix. Nope, your cervix when pregnant should not look like a funnel when you are only 19 weeks along. After some more looking it was determined that my cervix is soft and shortened. It was opening up when it should stay closed until the baby is ready to be born. Ugh.
Right away the Dr came in and talked to us and her face was very serious. What she recommended was surgery to close up that cervix and keep our sweet baby in there. A cerclage does just that and I was quickly scheduled for this afternoon. Luckily our Dr office is attached to the hospital so they were easily able to bring me up to the maternity floor and get things started.
Oh but let me back up... to add to our good luck... just as we were figuring out that I would be having surgery the school nurse called to tell us that Anna had thrown up at Kidstop and needed someone to come pick her up! Thankfully our dear friend Sarah was willing to leave work and go pick up Anna from school. Between her and her husband Joe, they covered the whole day with our sick child. So thankful that they did that for us!
I had the surgery and everything went as well as it could. Am being held here overnight for observation and will be going home sometime tomorrow morning for at least a week of bedrest. We will know more about that tomorrow when we meet with the Dr again. We will then devise our plan!
Tonight we are counting our blessings. Thankful for friends that leave work to watch out child, thankful for my mom, Heath and Jill for being with me in the hospital this afternoon, thankful for all the prayers because we can feel them, and thankful that our baby girl is healthy and has a strong heart beat and for now is staying put! Look for more updates to come.
Oh and did you notice....................... I said baby girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow-that is quite a day! You just rest up and take care of that little girl (and big sister!) Thank goodness they solved the problem early on..... Lots of prayers coming your way!
Tina, that exact thing happened to me in my pregnancy. My cerclage was placed at 12 weeks. It really helped, but I'm sure they will still monitor you very closely to track the length of your cervix. Bedrest is the pits, but it's so worth it. I'm a strong believer in the power of visualization and meditation and recommend using those tools if you are feeling stressed out. Good luck and I will be thinking about you lots! Sending good cervix-preserving energy your way! :)
I'm so glad they caught it and were able to take care of things! I'll be praying for a continued healthy pregnancy! Congrats on another girl!
Hey, what a day for you and the fam.! : / Glad to hear that the surgery went well and your little peanut is safe and sound. Time to catch up on some books you might not have had the time for before? We'll see you soon. Meals and all that fun stuff will surely be coming your way! : )
Yay! A girl!
Praying for you and your little peanut princess. Despite the seriousness of the post, it cracked me up that you'd have a kid throwing up in the midst of all this. That is SO my life! I didn't have this problem, but was incapacitated for about 5 months of my first pregnancy with hyperemesis and was laying around vomiting at home. What we go through for our children! Take care and God bless!
Lots of prayers coming your way! So happy your baby girl is healthy and praying she'll stay put until it's time. God is good - lean on Him. Blessings!
Oh my goodness. I cannot believe what a Wednesday you had. First, yah, it's a girl! Congraulations! You will love having two girls! Second, I'm so glad to hear that you and baby are doing well. If the worst thing is to be on bed rest for a week, not bad! I'm glad tha Anna is feeling better (Madison is too). Take it easy and rest up! We will pray for you guys and know God is watching out for you all! Hugs to you all!
