The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

THE GOOD
We were thrilled to be taking our second camping trip of the year and second weekend in a row with our good friends Heath, Jill and Brevin. This was the second year going on Father's Day weekend and we were really looking forward to it! Our first choice for campground this year was Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park but unfortunately the park and caves were impacted by the recent flooding. So we threw a dart at the map and came up with Sakatah Lake State Park instead!

We didn't have a reservation so we just went on a Thursday night and got a great non-reservable site instead. That was the first time we had gone without a reservation but had a nice time picking out the best site! We loved this campground and this park in general. Most of the sites were very private and heavily wooded. The park has a state bike trail going through it which looked really nice. Unfortunately, we haven't gotten a system set up yet that we can take our bikes with but hopefully next year we will be able to do that. We also tried to rent bikes but that didn't work out too well!

As you know from my previous post, the mosquitoes are terrible this time of the year but the other good thing about our trip was that I found a great bug repellent that kept a 15x15 area bug free. It is called Thermacell and it really works. There's my plug!

For most of the weekend we really just enjoyed watching Anna and Brev play together so well while the adults played games, read books, or took naps! Well, the kids weren't playing while we took naps but you get the idea. It was a great weekend to get unplugged and relax.

THE BAD
Then Saturday came. After a day full of what seemed like mishaps, Heath and Jill introduced us to campfire donuts. They were so yummy and we were really wishing Jill hadn't tried to "help" us by bringing the smallest can of dough that she could find. Afterwards though, Heath was moving the coffee can of hot grease off the fire to allow it to cool and it slipped and spilled hot grease all over Jill's bare legs. You can read more about the incident on their blog! It was a very scary moment but were glad we could help get her to the hospital, get their stuff packed up for them and take care of Brev! As yummy as those donuts were I am not sure we will be ready anytime soon to partake in those again! As Jill has said over and over, accidents happen and we are all just very thankful that it wasn't one of the kids!

THE UGLY
On Monday, I went to the Dr with Jill so they could take a look at her legs and make sure everything looked OK. I got a great glimpse of the burn and the wonderful blisters the size of ping pong balls that had formed. She so lovingly named them Fester and Weepy! They were ugly!

So there you have it; the good, the bad, and the ugly! Overall it was a fabulous weekend with a couple major lessons learned! Looking forward to our next camping adventure with the Vosbergs and hopefully no emergency room trips associated with it!

Hi Tina,

I've peeked at your site a few times and really enjoy it. Well done! What a camping trip this last one turned out to be. I'm glad to hear your friend Jill is doing okay.

I too enjoy Alexander McCall Smith. I actually belong to a reading group called the No. 1 Ladies Book Club as a take from his series.

Our kids just keep right on growing! I enjoy the pictures of Anna and look forward to seeing how much she's changed over the past year.

Love,
You cousin Ang
