History as it Happens

There are a few moments of my life that I knew at that moment I was living history.  I know where I was at those moments and I will never forget.  I knew those moments would forever be remembered.

I was in 4th grade when the Challenger exploded.  We had actually been released from school to go to religion class.  We were up in the sanctuary when the church secretary came in and told the teachers about the terrible event.  I remember knelling and praying like it was yesterday.  I remember getting back to school and then getting home and actually seeing it for the first time.  I remember feeling the gravity of the situation.

I was on my way to work on September 11, 2001.  I was running late and traffic had been bad.  I was still 15 minutes from my office when the first plane hit the WTC.  I was listening to talk radio and remember them breaking into the show to tell us about the "accident".  And I was still on my way to work when the 2nd plane hit and we all knew that it was no accident.  I remember distinctly the radio announcer saying that we were under attack.

Those were two sad and tragic events in American history.  Today was also a day that I will never forget and that will live on in history books but this time we can be happy.  We can celebrate.

Of course I am thrilled that President Obama is at the reigns and I believe ready to lead out country.  But I really stepped back today as an Obama supporter and tried to look at this for what it really is.  This is America at its best.  This is an America that elected an African American man to be our President.  I honestly didn't know if I would see a day like this in my lifetime.  And that is what I am celebrating today.  That is why I cried watching the inauguration today.  The amazing barriers that were broken today were monumental.  The 1.5 million people that made the trek just to say they were there the day and that were there to represent their ancestors before them inspired me.

I also was just in awe of the traditions that were held today.  Traditions that go back to George Washington.  All the way back to our FIRST president.  Amazing.  I loved hearing all the stories of past presidents.   I think my second calling may be to become a presidential historian.

I look forward to LIVING HISTORY that I will remember for the rest of my life and for a happy occasion and not one that brings sad thoughts.

if only we could......

Five Quick Years

How is it possible that our little baby, born at a mere 3 pounds-10 ounces, is now........................

.................FIVE YEARS OLD!?

This time 5 years ago we were in shock!  Could not believe that the little one growing in my tummy made such an early appearance - 8 1/2 weeks early.   And now I am in shock again.  This time shocked that 5 years have gone by and now what we have is a little girl preparing to go to school.

Five years used to seem like a long time.  Like when you are in 7th grade and you think you will never get to be a senior.  Or when you go to college and you never think your graduation day will come.  And then you don't have school and grade levels to measure time and there it goes, faster than it feels like you can live.

Thinking back to those first weeks of Anna's life, things were uncertain.  We knew that she was strong and could breathe on her own, except when she would forget to.  But we didn't know what the long term implications of her prematurity would be.  Would she have poor eyesight or hearing or would she have trouble gaining weight or height.  Would she have developmental delays.   She amazed us and her doctors and now you would never know that she even started out life with such uncertainties.

Every year has been better and better but of course not without the typical parenting "learning moments".  Each year is more fun for a different reason.   At two Anna was talking and learning more and more words every day.  At three she was growing up to be a little girl and getting more and more independent.  At four she exploded with new phrases and sentences and learning capability as well as the ability to make new friends and enjoy her "old" friends too.

So what will 5 bring?  I see this coming year as a year of changes and more learning to be had!  She will leave Mary's and head to Kindergarten.  Not sure who will have a harder time with that transition at first.  But we so look forward to seeing our little one in school and seeing her succeed.

As a write this post in the evening of her birthday I think again about the last five years and marvel at the wonderful memories and the thought of all the exciting things that are waiting for us in the next 365 days!

Happy Birthday Anna Banana!  Hope you enjoyed your birth day and we look forward to celebrating again on Sat with your party!  We love you so much and can't wait to see what the year brings for you!  Love, Mommy and Daddy

More Movie Reviews

I love this time of the year! Great movies come out and we have time to go see them! This year was no exception. I already blogged about seeing Milk and now I have 3 more to recommend to you!

Slumdog Millionaire - Great movie! The premise of the movie involves a young man in India who goes on India's version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?. He is doing well and they suspect him of cheating. The movie goes back in time with flashbacks to instances in his life where he experiences something about the questions he is asked. It goes back to the slums of India and the life of people in that part of the world. Very eye opening and great movie.

Bolt - Ever since Toy Story I have loved Disney Pixar movies! This one is no exception. This movie is about a dog who really believes he is a super hero because he plays one on TV. Really a cute story. And I love how they throw in the jokes for the adults too! Anna thought it was great and we did too.

High School Musical 3 - I know Anna seems a little young to be into these movies and as a friend of mine has said - we are starting down a slippery slope! :) I take full responsibility for that because I LOVE these movies. I have always loved a good musical but through in high school drama and I am sold! I think they are good fun and have some good catchy tunes. The 3rd installment to the series did not let me down. It may even be my favorite.
